What type of filter is best for a african chichlid tank (55 gal)?

I have a 55 gal tank and have two filters going in it at all times..One is a submersible filter and the other is a cascading filter.. Would a canister filter work better...they are messy fish and I can't seem to keep the water clean...any ideas .
