Is the Aqueon 40 ok for salt water in my fishtank?

I just bought a 36 gallon bow front tank. With an Aqueon 40 filter and a heater. I really want a salt water tank with no live coral, just fish only. So my question is, will my setup work if I add salt water. I don't need an amzong setup just one that will work and keep my fish happy and living and my water clear? I have heard mixed reviews some say it's fine for salt fish only others say I need a canister filter and a protein skimmer. But I would really like to just use what I currently have! Please help me!
