What does "cocktail dresses and other appropriate attire" mean?

I'm going to a sweet sixteen party (on a boat if that helps) and that was written under attire. What does that even mean? Like, homecoming dress? Or that purple thing I got from Delia's? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
